Gynecomastia is condition of enlarged breasts in men that can cause emotional discomfort and impair self-confidence. Male breast reduction can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs that can occur at any age. Surgery is one option for solving the problem. Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.
Procedure:
The surgery usually takes about one to two hours. Gynecomastia surgery is performed under General anesthesia. This is outpatient procedure and the patients return to home after the surgery. For breast tissue excised a small, semicircular incision will be required in the areola (skin surrounding the nipple) so that breast tissue can be removed while leaving the smallest scar possible. For excess skin to be removed, this will be performed through additional incisions before they are closed.
Recovery:
The recovery time for gynecomastia surgery is 1 to 3 weeks. Surgeons usually recommend the first two or three days of total rest. Few weeks after surgery, a compression vest will be worn to help the skin retract and prevent fluid accumulation from occurring. Substantial swelling and some bruising are to be expected during this time. Pain can be controlled with medication. After the one or two weeks, patients can begin to resume some normal activities. Bruising and swelling will resolve gradually until final results can be seen over the months following surgery. Surgeon will give specific instructions on how to care.
