Ovarian cysts are relatively common and many women will have an ovarian cyst at some point. An ovarian cystectomy is a procedure to remove a cyst on or in ovary. An ovarian cyst is rarely malignant and frequently disappears without treatment. If ovarian cyst is very large or causing painful or malignant, surgery is treatment option.
Procedure:
The surgery is performed under General anesthesia. This is outpatient procedure and the patients return to home after the surgery. An ovarian cystectomy can be carried out in two different ways; laparoscopy or laparotomy that usually carried out laparoscopy. Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery technique that only uses a few small incisions.
Recovery:
The pain can be relieved with analgesic, antibiotic prescribed to prevent infection. After procedure will need to rest and avoid heavy activities for two weeks. Laparotomy recovery takes a bit longer usually between six and eight weeks. Surgeon will give specific instructions on how to care.
