Ultrasound guided prostate biopsy

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and the penis and front of the rectum that produces fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. An ultrasound guided prostate biopsy is a procedure where a special needle is inserted into the prostate gland to take a small sample of gland tissue. This procedure is performed by urologist.


Procedure:
The ultrasound and biopsy procedure itself takes approximately 30 minutes. Prostate biopsy is performed under local or general anesthesia. This is outpatient procedure and the patients return to home after the surgery.
 To take the biopsy a very fine needle is guided, using pictures or images the doctor can see on the ultrasound screen, through the wall of rectum into the prostate and a sample of tissue is taken. The sample is sent to pathology for analysis.


Recovery:
Doctor will recommend do only light activities for two days after your prostate biopsy. Patients Feel slight soreness and have some light bleeding from rectum. For decrease pain and risk of infection, Patients will take pain medication and antibiotics. For a first few days, there are bloods in urine or stools. For few weeks after surgery, semen has a red tint that caused by a small amount of blood in semen. Surgeon will give specific instructions on how to care.
