A cone biopsy (conization) is surgery to remove a sample of abnormal tissue from the cervix. Cervical conization used to diagnose and sometimes to treat abnormal cervical tissue.
Procedure:
This surgery performed under general anesthesia or regional anesthesia. This is outpatient procedure and the patients return to home after the surgery. During in procedure a small cone-shaped sample of tissue is removed from the cervix and examined under a microscope for signs of cancer.
Recovery:
For the first week patients must rest as much as can and avoid all heavy activity. Most patients are able to return to their normal activity level in one to two weeks. Surgeon will give specific instructions on how to care.
