Microscopic vasoepididymostomy surgery

Microscopic vasoepididymostomy surgery

Microscopic vasoepididymostomy is procedure for treatment of epididymal obstruction that it is performed in an attempt to restore the flow of sperm from the testicles. Blockages in the epididymis can result from infections in the epididymis, previous vasectomy and trauma to the epididymis or injury from previous scrotal surgery. Several recent advances in microsurgical techniques have increased the ease and precision of performing the delicate anastomosic procedure between the vas deferens and epididymis. Traditionally, vasoepididymostomy is approached by way of a scrotal incision large enough for complete exteriorization of the testis to provide the surgeon with the adequate exposure to the entire epididymis and the vas deferens that it is usually associated with longer recovery times and increased pain and swelling.

Procedure:
Vasoepididymostomy takes between 2 and 4 hours. It is performed under General anesthesia. This is outpatient procedure and the patients return to home after the surgery. A vertical midline scrotal incision is made through the skin, subcutaneous tissue and the dartos layer. With the assistance of an operating microscope vas deferens is connected to a single epididymal tubule in order to bypass a blockage in the epididymis.

Recovery:
Postoperative pain control is satisfactorily achieved with painkill. The patient can return to work 3 days after surgery, strenuous physical activity should be limited for one month. Follow-up visits do for monthly till 3 month. Surgeon will give specific instructions on how to care.
