Inguinal hernia occurs when part of an internal organ or abdominal fat protrude through a weak point or tear in the peritoneum and enters the inguinal canal. The common areas where hernias occur are in the groin, belly button (umbilical) and the incisional of a previous operation. Enlarging or painful hernias usually require surgery to relieve discomfort and prevent serious complications.
